U18 Cougars - Tewkesbury Town

Home vs Tewkesbury Town.

As this was our first game, and our opponents came with a glowing reputation, we set up to frustrate, defend, be organised and take our chances when they came. Some players were in unfamiliar positions and we were definitely undercooked coming into the game.

The first goal from a pinpoint cross from Charlie down the right, tucked in by Gus was probably our first meaningful attack. The midfield battle was key, with Sam, Jared and Dan working hard to deny Tewkesbury time or space on the ball, but showing their quality when allowed. Jake and Bill dominated as centre backs, ably supported by Oli and Scott at fullback. As the half went on both Kai and Charlie dropped deeper to create a 5 across midfield with Gus becoming isolated up front. Shortly after half time, Tewkesbury equalised with a wonder strike (cross) from the wide edge of the penalty area. We were then under the cosh but maintained our shape with Will dropping in on the left. LRFC still looked dangerous on the break and it was again Charlie's cross from the right that lead to an own goal. With Tewkesbury pushing on Gus was brought down on the edge of the box - the referee taking no further action! Due punishment was to follow as the free kick was scored directly into the top corner, with their keeper motionless. Tewkesbury gained a penalty for a chance to apply pressure in the closing moments, but MOTM Seth made a diving save to his right. Drafted in at the last minute, Seth grabbed the gloves and put in an impeccable performance. LRFC created one last chance with Billy galloping forward on the break only to see his shot cleared off the line by a retreating defender.

This was a surprising result, but one fully justified and earned. If we can build on today's performance, we can start to play more football.

Lastly, best wishes to Ollie for a speedy recovery.
